Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Team Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise selection.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia look for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
